LIVE REVIEW: Overpass + Florentenes

The floorboards of Liverpool’s Arts Club Loft morphed itself into a trampoline on Thursday night as Overpass sold out the Seel Street venue.

The Birmingham natives have been steadily growing and building their name in the UK music scene over the last few years and it’s hard to believe that they aren’t chasing arena slots yet when they have a sound that could shake a small club venue and simultaneously boom in an arena.

With support from Manchester indie outfit, Florentenes, the night started loud as frontman William Smith swaggered about with a voice reminiscent of Miles Kane and Jake Bugg and showcased how these young Manc lads have confidence way beyond their years.

Smith’s ability to work the crowd and hold the attention of the audience was phenomenal with even the occasional joke thrown in apologising to the crowd for being from Manchester.

With thrashy and distorted guitars the energy was high throughout their half hour set, even the slower songs kept the energy high leaving no doubt that these guys are set for big things.

From the first note, Overpass had the crowd of Liverpudlians singing every word and guitar riff back at them. By the 5th song in the set, multiple gig goers had climbed up on their mates shoulders to scream every lyric of the well-known tracks such as ‘Right Time’ and ‘3AM’.

The night was full of surprises with multiple new songs being previewed including one titled ‘Sandman’ which catered to a very grungey 1990’s era of rock music and a slightly new direction for the band, but the audience were moving along in agreement. Taking a breather midway through the set, frontman Max Newy stripped back ‘From The Night’, for a wholesome singalong bringing a new life to the track.

Closing out the high energy night with crowd favourite ‘Beautiful’, arms were wrapped around friends’ shoulders as the audience had their moment to shine singing along to Newy’s guitar.

Overpass are truly one of the greatest indie bands on the scene right now and they know how to put on a damn good show.
