LIVE REVIEW: Venus Grrrls

last night a sold out Cluny 2 crowd succumbed to the witchy stylings of emerging all girl, goth-grunge group, Venus Grrrls.

The self proclaimed ‘Leeds/Newcastle rock coven’ performed an entrancing set, that only went from strength to strength to strength throughout. A feat made even more impressive by a sold out crowd, which was a colourful tapestry of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

From the first note it was abundantly clear why there were no tickets to spare. Lead Vocalist, GK, projected Powerful, captivating, and near flawless vocals for the entirety of the  evening; she is very much a striking presence on stage. All this is only elevated from the superb efforts from Eliza Lee (Lead Guitar), Hannah Barraclough (Bass), Grace Stubbings (Synth) and Gabby Cooke (Drums) .

The whole Aura around the group is like, for lack of a better term, intoxicating witchy woo woo. At times it was as if they were reciting an incantation, every riff, every melody, every word, a methodical part of the spell they were casting. It created such an atmosphere of mystery and authority, putting everyone under its control.

Anyone familiar with Scooby Doo, will be very familiar with the fictional goth-rock witch coven, known as The Hex Girls. Well if, like us, you’ve ever wished the group were manifested into the real world, then look no longer. The group takes clear inspiration from the iconic Trio, and we love them for it. At times it was truly like Venus Grrrls were their avatars in reality, which is truly one of the highest compliments we can give.

Lead Vocalist GK

One of the more poignant and distinctive moments of the evening was their rendition of ‘Lidocaine’, something made all the more special when given context from frontwoman GK. GK shared how she unfortunately suffered from Acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, and how she is now, thankfully, in remission.

The whole affair was made all the more special by the group recognising the attendance of someone on behalf of Anthony Nolan’s: A charity whose goal is to find lifesaving matches for people with blood cancer and blood disorders, like acute myeloid leukemia.

It was touching, profound and truly uplifting to witness a group using their platform to initiate real good from personal experience.

Overall it was a genuinely invigorating experience from a group, who not only have a remarkable aesthetic, but also the genuine talent to back it up with as well. Venus Grrrls are spellbinding, magnificent and deserve all the success that is no doubt due to come their way in the near future.

Their tour continues in the coming weeks with dates across the UK, with tickets limited in most venues.
